Helen Matthewson Memorial Scholarship

With preference to partially self-supporting in-state students having demonstrated financial need and a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, the Helen Matthewson Memorial Scholarship for full-time UCLA College undergraduates was established in 1997.

Applicants must demonstrate that they are:

  • At least partially self-supporting
  • A California resident
  • A U.S. citizen

Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA and be enrolled during Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters. Award amount varies and is renewable.

    • Are you partially self-supporting at present?
    • If yes, what employment do you hold at present that provides that partial self-support? Please briefly describe your role, how long you have held the position and what motivated you to seek employment.
  2. What career goals and other factors motivated you to attend UCLA? To what extent do you need supplemental financing? What other pertinent information would you like to share? (The essay will constitute a sample of your writing.)
  3. Have you filed the FAFSA or Dream Act Application?
  4. Please upload a current resume that focuses on your work experiences.
  5. Please write a 150-word bio in third person that summarizes your work experiences and includes a brief statement of your intended major/minor and current career goals.
  6. LETTER OF REFERENCE: Please provide the name and email of someone (not a peer or family member) who will provide a letter of reference on your behalf that speaks to your work experiences and how you have balanced those with your studies and other activities. Be sure to obtain permission from your recommender before submitting their name and email address. Your recommender will automatically receive a link prompting them to upload the recommendation via the UCLA Scholarship Portal.
