Marion Lucy Queal Scholarship
The *Marion Lucy Queal Scholarship * was established in 1990, to honor the first woman to receive a doctorate degree from UCLA, to support scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need.
Dr. Queal held three degrees in Zoology from UCLA. She received her B.A. in 1931, was a teaching assistant on the campus in 1934, and then obtained her master’s degree in 1935. Working under the instruction of Dr. Albert W. Bellamy, chairman of the department of zoology, Marion went on to gain the honor of a doctorate degree on June 3, 1942, along with 14 other male students. All 40 of the previous doctoral awardees at UCLA had been male since they began awarding the degree in 1938.
