Guy Thomson Ellis Scholarship Fund

The Guy Thomson Ellis Scholarship Fund was established to support UCLA students whose family members are employed through the General Telephone Company of California and GTE (now known as VERIZON and/or Frontier Communications).

DONOR SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

  1. The fund will be administered under the framework of the donor.
  2. With regard to eligibility, the important principle is one of lineal descent — primarily, children of employees, and in some cases, grandchildren of employees of General Telephone. This does not exclude the possibility that exceptions could be made for spouses of employees or other close relatives when it is deemed appropriate by both General Telephone and UCLA.
  3. Applications for scholarships must be made annually, including continuing students who have received a prior award. It is the intention, however, that preference be given to continuing students who have demonstrated academic ability at UCLA.
  4. Each applicant for consideration as the recipient of an award from the Guy Thomson Ellis Scholarship Fund must meet the admission standards for acceptance as a full -time student at UCLA and must have met all the requirements for admission to the University of California.
  5. The first priority for determining awardees for the scholarship fund will be on the basis of scholarship. The amount of the award may include other factors, such as financial need, extracurricular activities, and may other considerations mutually agreed upon by UCLA and General Telephone.
  6. If, for any reason, fewer awards made in any given year, earnings not used may be added to the corpus of the fund.
  7. Applicants are encouraged to first apply for a California State Scholarship. General Telephone management will take the responsibility for notifying applicants of this availability and providing information concerning the California State Scholarship rules.
  8. Awards will be made one year at a time, and the award for each individual student will be reevaluated and re-examined each subsequent year that the student is enrolled at UCLA.
  9. The student will be qualified to maintain his scholarship award for that year, even if the parent leaves the employ of General Telephone in mid-year. They will not be eligible for the scholarship aid under this fund the following year if their parent is no longer an employee of the company.
