Data Justice Scholars
With strategic funding UCLA received from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to foster collaborative and community-engaged learning opportunities, the Mellon Data & Social Justice Curricular Initiatives Program, Digital Humanities Program, and the Center for Community Engagement are pleased to announce a dynamic new scholarship opportunity for undergraduate students titled the “Data Justice Scholarship.” We seek either junior or senior undergraduate students majoring or minoring in the social sciences and the humanities who demonstrate a commitment to social justice through their scholarship and community-engagement. Finally, this scholarship offers students a valuable learning opportunity to consider the intersections between data-based research and social justice. Students who are awarded the “Data Justice Scholarship” will enroll in a two quarter courses sequence titled “Whose Lives Count?” to consider the social justice implications of gathering, analyzing, and mobilizing data. Specifically, we will offer scholarship awards of $6,000.00 for the academic year 2022-2023. Under the guidance of the Program Director of the Mellon Social Justice Initiatives, the inaugural cohort of social justice scholars will also participate in collectively curating a new website which assembles data sources useful for research on social justice issues in Los Angeles. The emerging website will be hosted by the Center of Community Engagement and is titled the “Los Angeles Data Justice Hub.” The new cohort of “Data Justice Scholars” will also be required to present at an undergraduate colloquium in Spring 2023.
Eligibility: UCLA junior and senior undergraduate students who are enrolled as Majors or Minor in any discipline.
