Erwin R. Baker, Jesica L. Baker Scholarship Fund
The Erwin R. Baker, Jesica L. Baker Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 for a student with junior or senior standing majoring in Communication Studies who has demonstrated an interest in a career in print journalism. The recipient of the scholarship is to be known as the Baker scholar and will be entitled to list the award on his or her resume provided that the year of the award is always appended right after the designation.
Criteria for selection of the Baker scholar is as follows:
- The recipient must be a junior or senior student at UCLA majoring in Communication studies and a staff member of the Daily Bruin newspaper.
- The scholarship candidate must submit a portfolio of writing for the Daily Bruin.
- The scholarship candidate must submit a personally written essay, not longer than 500 words, which will serve as a statement of intent for a career in print media.
- The scholarship candidate must have a strong academic record.
Criteria 1,2,3 will be given priority in the application review process with criteria 4 used to break ties between candidates.
The Baker Scholar will be selected from the pool of all eligible applicants. The Director of the Communication Studies Program in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Bruin and the teaching faculty of the Communication Studies Program, especially those who have print journalism backgrounds, will select the recipient of the Baker Scholarship from all eligible applicants. Students who receive the Baker Scholarship for the junior year are eligible to reapply for the senior year. The Baker Scholarship will be awarded annually prior to the Fall academic term.
