Karen Silton First-Gen Internship Scholarship

The department will award a Scholarship in the amount between $500 – $1500.

Eligibility Criteria
Recipients of the Karen Silton First-Generation Internship scholarship are selected based on strong academic achievement and evidence of developing a sociological imagination. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

-Be an enrolled Pre-sociology or Sociology major at the time of application, with at least 1 quarter in residence at UCLA
-First-generation undergraduate student (i.e., those with parents/guardians who did not graduate from a 4-year college or university)
-Plan to be enrolled in Sociology 195CE (Center for Community Engagement Internship Course) during the upcoming quarter (see Center for Community Engagement website for process, with enrollment appointments the first two weeks of the quarter)
-Award dependent on enrollment in 195CE

Application Deadline
To be considered, applications must be received by the following dates:
Fall 2023 deadline: Friday, September 1st
Winter 2024 deadline: Friday, November 17th
Spring 2024 deadline: Friday, April 19th

Application Instructions
To apply, we request that students submit a statement (maximum 500 words) briefly describing their background, the nature of the internship they have secured, and a description of how the internship will contribute to their career goals.

Please include a current resume along with your application.

Evaluation and Announcement of Winner
One or more awardees will be selected based on the merits of the applicant and the likely benefit of the internship for the applicant’s career plans. (Note: they don’t need to necessarily plan a career in the specific industry of the internship, as long as they can articulate how the internship will benefit their longer-term career plans).

A faculty committee will evaluate applications in the weeks following the deadline listed above. The scholarship award winner will be notified before the start of the quarter.
